What separates us

In the city, a thin line between intimacy and the desire to be part of society is accentuated. Trapped in large hives, we choose to share space rather than seek a remote one. Thus, we settle in brick caves to integrate into society, while avoiding the abandonment of individuality. WHAT SEPARATES US is a reflection on that fragile line dividing the wish to belong to a community and the fear of being absorbed by it. Using different media, it portrays an everyday object positioned on the edge of our refuge. Blinds and screens cover the nakedness of windows, becoming walls and air, integration and exclusion. Perhaps that is what we desire from society: a distant relationship that does not intrude into our small world; a multidimensional companion waiting on the sidewalk. What separates us? What do we fear losing in community? Perhaps it is exquisite to be on the right side of the barricade, from where the universe expands and no one glimpses our body. Perhaps we are snoopers and modest. Maybe we don’t need a roof and walls, just a blind that regulates how solitary we want to be upon waking.
